Franco Zeffirelli

My choice for the best on screen portrayal of Hamlet is Franco Zeffirelli's. Many factors contributed to my choice. First, the setting of the opening scene immediately set the mood for the movie. The mysterious dark  castle at midnight triggered a suspenseful feeling that grabbed my attention right off the bat. Next, the music contributed to setting the dark and ominous tone of the midnight watch. Also, the actors were extremely convincing in their use of Shakespearean language. Their costumes, and appearance made it believable that they were in 12th century Denmark. Lastly, seeing Hamlet at his fathers burial helped lock us into the anger, and disappointment Hamlet feels for Claudius and Gertrude. Although we only watched a few minutes of the movie, I was very impressed and would love to see more.

  1. I agree, the setting, costumes, and ton were very on point with the play itself and seeing Hamlet at his father's burial was extremely effect, but I do not believe that Shakespeare's work should be altered in any way, if even to send of a specific effect.
